Compagnie Schmaltz ziet het licht in de zomer van 2006 wanneer het cultuurcentrum Schoten vraagt om een project met jongeren te organiseren. Hiervoor wordt Idejaal! gemaakt, een voorstelling op basis van”An Ideal Husband” van Oscar Wilde.

Dit project smaakt duidelijk naar meer en met z’n tienen wordt er opnieuw een voorstelling gemaakt naar Tsjechovs “Oom Wanja”. Vanja speelt in februari 2009 in theater Carwash in Borgerhout.

Het kiezen van een geschikte naam nam veel tijd en discussies in beslag. Uiteindelijk wordt de bende Compagnie Schmaltz gedoopt.
